Books by Ed Newman

I've been a publishing writer and columnist since the early 1980's. My story "The Breaking Point" won the 1991 Arrowhead Fiction Competition. My debut YA novel, "The Red Scorpion", saw publication in Sepetember 2011 followed by three volumes of short fiction titled "Unremembered Histories", "Newmanesque" and "The Breaking Point & Other Stories". My stories have been translated into three languages with one becoming a short film that garnered accolades at the Erie Film Festival. I'm also the author of a daily blog called "Ennyman's Territory".

Book - The Red Scorpion

The Red Scorpion

A YA haunted house thriller with a supernatural twist. While on a late 1930's research venture in Mexico, a University of Minnesota anthropologist experiences a serendipitous encounter with a youth from a secretive indigenous clan. The youth, who has become disaffected with his people, shares with Dr. Comstock a secret of his people and introduces him to the red scorpions that for centuries have been guarding the final resting place of the legendary Quetzlcoatl.

Book - A Remarkable Tale from the Land of Podd

A Remarkable Tale from the Land of Podd

The good people of Podd are a strange lot. Everyone in the kingdom thinks himself or herself to be somehow odd or weird—and considers everyone else to be perfectly normal. Some worry they have funny hair; others don’t like the shape of their noses; and still more think their eyes look strange.

When an enemy threatens to march his army into Podd, the king (who thinks he has very odd-looking feet) looks for a hero to defend the country. But everyone he asks refuses to lead Podd’s army, arguing their problems make them too weird to save the kingdom. Will the citizens of Podd learn to accept themselves for who they are and find the courage to defend the realm, or are the land of Podd and its people doomed?

Unremembered Histories - Six Stories with a Supernatural Twist

Unremembered Histories is a collection of literary fiction by author Ed Newman, winner of the 1991 Arrowhead Fiction Competition. While the individual stories stand alone as independent entities, the common thread in this collection is the paranormal or supranormal aspect in each. The title of the book is derived from the centerpiece story, An Unremembered History of the World and its introduction to the notion of parallel histories as well as the brokenness within our own history. In many of his stories, such as Two Acts That Changed the World, Newman blends real life situations with a probing imagination. In this and other stories here we see the author’s fascination with dreams, dreaming and the extended possibilities of consciousness. The story Duel of the Poets is the author’s attempt to acknowledge Jorge Luis Borges as one of his literary influences. Duel of the Poets has been translated into Croatian where it was selected to be the centerpiece of a poetry site in the 1990’s.

Book - Newmanesque - Five Stories from Another Space in Time

Newmanesque - Five Stories from Another Space in Time

Newmanesque is a second collection of literary short fiction. While the individual stories stand alone as independent entities, the common thread in this collection is their singular quality of being... Newmanesque. This collection contains several of my favorite stories including The M Zone, A Poem About Truth, The Unfinished Stories of Richard Allen Garston, The Nose, and Terrorists Preying, which has been translated into French by Aude Fondard.and is currently only $.99 on Kindle.

Book - The Breaking Point and Other Stories

The Breaking Point & Other Stories

This, my third collection of short stories, features my winning 1991 Arrowhead Regional Fiction Competition story "The Breaking Point" plus four other stories. The stories here are more conventional, with the usual twists. One reader wrote that the stories "contain insight into relationships" with "subject matter regarding love relationship's emotions, expectations, illusions, and delusions in the most mundane characters." In the midst of their ordinary lives there is a decisive extraordinary event.

How to Teach Writing and Prepare Your Favorite Students for College, Life and Everything Else

Good writing skills are essential to success. This book outlines my philosophy for teaching writing which I nearly guarantee will make a difference in your child’s life. This is a book originally written to help home school teachers but is actually for anyone interested in helping kids improve their writing skills. Essentially the book offers an original teaching approach that helps unstop critical barriers that inhibit young students. The exercises are designed to teach critical skills and tactics, and to make writing fun.

Book - Intergalactica

Intergalactica

In the spring of 2012 I was involved in an exhilarating collaborative art project called Artist Kamikaze IV. This was my second year and I was initially paired with clothing artist Patricia Mahnke. The project we undertook was ambitious so we didn't waste any time meeting to outline a plan. What we decided was to create a character and costume, whom I would then paint. Eventually this evolved into two characters and costumes.

As the project evolved we had the good fortune of being able to obtain a third partner, Kate Dupre, who brought photography and Photoshop skills to the project. I found the completed project so cool that I felt it shouldn't be such a temporary piece. With assistance I had the story and images re-assembled into an eBook which is available This eBook is FREE on iTunes.
